Issues

Most of the issues of our day are cultural and personal rather than governmental issues. Government is a blunt instrument which cannot be expected to make all people thrive in spite of their personal choices. It can guarantee equal opportunity, punish injustice, secure individual rights and provide a safety net for those with unbearable burdens.

I am concerned about:
  • Government’s primary job of public safety is being sacrificed.
  • An education system with increasing costs and declining service levels. Families are the client, and they should be getting a great education. One in ten students dropping out is a problem.
  • The rising cost of living due to inflation-causing policies. Regulations, artificial scarcity and rising tax loads are unfairly impacting seniors on a fixed income and those struggling to gain self-sufficiency.
  • Astronomical housing costs are primarily a function of government policies related to land use, building, energy and public infrastructure. These are fixable, and we want our next generation to have opportunities.
  • An energy policy which doesn’t simply increase costs, but which recognizes that all opportunity for people requires energy.
  • Jobs and business startups are smothered by a host of policies, hurdles and expectations which were not placed on the prior generation.
Preserving each person’s right to clean air and water — now and for future generations.
Goals I pursue include:
  • Getting government to identify the public interest priorities and staying focused on effectively meeting those expectations.
  • Expanding the range of personalized education opportunities and services. One size does not fit all.
  • Investing in public infrastructure which levels the playing field for all enterprises and opportunities.
  • Plans for future energy use which is efficient, safe and sustainable.
  • Trimming back government functions which are wasteful, unfairly benefitting special interest, unsustainable and which sabotage personal responsibility.

Want to Help?

Let’s start working on making the community we want to have.

Because I believe in local control and community activism, I think we need to take a role in bringing about the change we want.

Be the voice of the community.
  • Write letters to the editor. Submit 500 word letters (shorter is better) to the Chronicle here.
  • Call or text in to local radio like KELA’s “Let’s Talk About It” show Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. (360) 330-5352. Listen online at www.KELAAM.com.
  • Contact federal, state, local, school and special district elected officials.
Affect the culture.
  • Graciously educate those you influence.
  • Get involved in charities and local service clubs to build a healthy community.
  • Support opportunities for young people and help them build success-producing ethics and strong families.
Sign up to receive updates on the rare occasion that I produce one.
